n Orthopantomogram — we just call it an OPG — is a panoramic X-ray that captures both your upper and lower jaws in one single, wide image. Think of it as a complete snapshot of your entire mouth. Why do we use it?The OPG is like a screening tool. It gives us a broad view of everything happening in your mouth, often revealing issues you didn't even know were there.Oral screening: We can spot cavities, infections, cysts, bone loss, and other problems across all your teeth at once.Impacted teeth: It shows us teeth that are stuck under the gums — especially wisdom teeth or teeth that haven't erupted properly. This is crucial before starting orthodontic treatment.Bone levels: For gum disease treatment or surgery, we can assess how much bone surrounds each tooth and plan accordingly.General diagnosis: It's a quick way to get an overall picture before diving into more detailed imaging if needed. What are its limitations?Because the OPG is a 2D image, it has some shortcomings:
Magnification: Objects can appear larger than they actually are
Superimposition: Structures overlap, so some details get hidden
Distortion: Measurements aren't 100% accurate
That's why we don't rely on it for precise measurements. If we need exact dimensions — like for implant planning — we'll use a CBCT scan instead. How is it taken? You'll stand or sit in the machine with your chin resting on a small platform. The X-ray arm rotates around your head, taking about 15–20 seconds to capture the full image. It's completely painless.

Orthopantomogram
Orthopantomogram, also called in short as OPG is an imaging modality which is used to obtain a two dimensional of your upper and lower jaws in a single view. It is more commonly used as a scout radiographic modality where several unaddressed and incidental findings are revealed. Being a two dimensional technique it cannot be relied upon for linear measurements because of its following shortcomings such as magnification, superimposition and distortion. OPG has its implications in oral screening and diagnosis, to lookout for any impacted teeth in orthodontics and to have an idea of the bone level specifically in periodontal surgeries
