An oral biopsy is a simple, safe procedure where we take a small tissue sample from your mouth and send it to a pathology lab to check any suspicious sore, patch, or lump. It is the gold standard for diagnosing non-healing ulcers, white or red patches, and other unusual changes in the mouth.
- When you may need it: Ulcers that don’t heal after 2–3 weeks, sudden white or red patches, lumps or thickened areas, or rough spots that persist.
- How it’s done: The area is completely numbed with local anaesthesia; a tiny piece of tissue is gently removed, sometimes with 1–2 dissolvable stitches.
- After the biopsy: The sample is examined under a microscope and reports usually arrive in about 5–7 days, after which we discuss the results.
- Healing: Mild discomfort for a day or two is common; most sites heal within a week with a soft diet and avoiding smoking and alcohol.
